Sử dụng các hình thái tu từ (figures of speech) đóng một vai trò quan trọng trong việc thể hiện năng lực sử dụng ngôn ngữ, làm cho lời nói trở nên sáng tạo hơn, ấn tượng hơn, và thú vị hơn. Sử dụng thành ngữ (idioms) là một trong những hình thái tu từ phổ biến.
Theo Cambridge Dictionary, thành ngữ được định nghĩa là “một cụm từ cố định có nghĩa khác với nghĩa của từng từ trong cụm từ đó”. Bên cạnh đó, nghĩa của một thành ngữ hầu hết được hiểu trong một ngôn ngữ nhất định, một nền văn hóa nhất định, hoặc một nhóm người nhất định. Ngôn ngữ Anh có khoảng 25,000 thành ngữ (theo literatyterms.net).
Việc sử dụng thành ngữ phù hợp với những người học ngoại ngữ ở trình độ intermediate đến advanced. Nếu thành ngữ được sử dụng đúng và phù hợp, diễn ngôn sẽ trở nên gần gũi với người bản địa hơn. Chính vì vậy, việc sử dụng thành ngữ cũng được xác định là một trong những tiêu chí đánh giá năng lực sử dụng một ngôn ngữ. Ví dụ, với bài thi IELTS Speaking, từng mức độ sử dụng thành ngữ có hiệu quả sẽ tương ứng với từng trình độ sử dụng ngôn ngữ khác nhau.
Một số thành ngữ theo chủ đề
1. Chủ đề về nơi chốn (places)
Yêu cầu một bài nói về nơi chốn có thể là mô tả một nơi có vẻ đẹp tự nhiên, mô tả một nơi bạn từng đến thăm, mô tả một tòa nhà quan trọng, mô tả một khu chợ ngoài trời… Tùy thuộc vào từng tình huống, người nói có thể lựa chọn sử dụng một số thành ngữ sau:

When something or someone is “worth its (or his/her) weight in gold,” it means that it is very valuable and useful.
